At the time of their marrage Joseph was 30 and Annie 24. His father John was deceased, her father Christopher was a miner. Neither had been previously married. Their witnesses were John Smith, Jane Smith, John Cotterill and Alma Smith. All participants signed their own names.

In 1901 the family, Joseph, Annie, May, Gladys and Albert Victor were living at Audley. Annie gave her birth place as Mosely Village, Congleton. The two younger children were born in Audley, May in Talke Pitts. Joseph was unsure whether he was born in Longton or Tunstall. (I suspect Tunstall is where he lived with his mum and dad but Longton is where his maternal grandparents lived).

In 1911 the family was living at Rhos Villa, New Road, Bagnall End, Staffs. May, 18 was an elementary school teacher, Gladys 15 and Victor 12 (Albert Victor appears to have been known as Victor) were still at school. Joseph 48 was still working as an engine winder. He and Annie, 44 had been married for 20 years and they had had 4 children, one of whom had died. Their house had six rooms including the kitchen but not the bathroom.
