Shared note

Age on death (21/12/1876) thought to be 76. Would put birth about 1800 but census information gives inconsistent ages, although majority favour 1801/1802.
Parish register of St John's, Wetley Rocks burial record spells his name Nott, his residence as Cheddleton ( probably Folly Farm, sometimes stated as Cheddleton) and gives his age as 76 years.
Best fit death registration is KNOTT, JAMES 75
GRO Reference: 1876 D Quarter in CHEADLE Volume 06B Page 177

There are four possible christening records which may be James:
30th July 1803 at Ipstones (nearby but not Ellastone) Parents Jas and Hanh. IGI C096841. Poosible siblings Ann born 30 Aug 1804 and christened 30 Sept 1804 (Ipstones) and William 7 Dec 1806 at Waterfall.
10 April 1803 in Cheadle, again age approximately correct and Cheadle near by but not Ellastone. Parents James and Ann Nutt. IGI C048522
12th October 1806 at Waterfall parents Samuel and Sarah Knott C045882. Siblings John 23 May 1802, Thomas 8 July 1804, Sarah 25 Dec 1808.

and in some ways the most likely;
6 Dec 1801 Ellastone, Staffs. Parent John and Sarah Nott (Knott?); IGI P010101. This has the correct birth place but makes James older than on some census records, although a match for the death registration). The same batch of christening records show a Fanney Knott chr 24th Feb 1805; this is almost certainly this James’ sister. (Census records show Fanny also born at Wootton).

However, doubt is thrown on this connection by gravestone inscription from St James and Batholemew’s church yard, Waterfall:
James KNOTT, of Waterhouses,
31 March 1883, 76
Frances HOWSON, sister, 2 April 1885, 79
Ellen, wife, 16 Aug 1884, 65
Nancy, was interred at Cauldon, 16 Aug 1894
Our James was not married to Ellen and he died in 1876 not 1883, but the James born in 1801 would have been 82, so age at death for this James suggests DOB in 1807 pointing to James son of Samuel and Sarah chr 12 Oct 1806 in Waterfall C045882. However there is no record of this James having a sister Frances.

When daughter Sarah Hood Knott was baptised at St Leonard's Ipstones in December 1826 the parish record shows that he and his wife Sarah were living at Chapel House, presumably in Ipstones and that he was a labourer.

1841 census - farmer aged 40, living at Folley Farm, Wetley Rocks which is where Sarah Dawson his wife was born. Children Thomas 10 , Ann 7 , Mary 3 and John 7 months

1851 living at Folley, a farmer with wife Sarah 42, and children James, 21, Thomas 19, Mary,12, John 10, Ellen, Elizabeth and Charles 1. (HO 107/2009/247). His age is difficult to read but may be 50; gives birth place as Wolton (Could it be Wootton, a hamlet just outside Ellastone?)

1861 Still living at Folly 57,James is an ag labourer with farm of 9.75 acres. He gives place of birth as Ellastone. With him are his wife Sarah, 52 a laundress and some of their children: Thomas a 30 year old stone mason, Ellen 15 and Elizabeth 13 and son Charles 11 - all three scholars. Thomas was born at Ipstones and the other children at Cheddleton (presumably Wetley Rocks). (RG9/1951/44/25)

1871 Aged 69 (born Ellerstone?) , farmer of 9 acres and a quarry man still living at Folley farm with his wife Sarah, 63 and grandsons Frederick Knott, aged 13 a stone mason’s labourer and Charles Knott 18months (both born Cheddleton). Also child's nurse Elizabeth Wolliscroft from Longton.
