1841 census - June 1941- age given as 7 months 1865 John aged 23, a miner, married Isabella Flanagan aged 22, at St Edward's parish church, Leek. They both lived in West Street, leek. His father was James Knott, a mason and hers was Bernard Flanagan a tailor. The witnesses were Bernard Flanagan and Mary Jane Phillips. Isabella signed her name but James made his mark. 1881 census - occupation: Gardener living at 12 Queen Street, Oldcolt, Goldenhill, aged 38 born Wetley Rocks, with wife Isabella aged 37 born Longnor with children Angela 14 born Leek, Ernest 11 born Brown Edge, R.A (Rosa Ellena) 9, born Greenway Bank, Albert 7 born Goldenhill, Archie, 4 born Goldenhill and Harold 2, born Goldenhill. 1891 John 48, a chemical labourer from Wetley Rocks, amd Isabella, 46 born Longnor, are living at Little Colclough, Goldenhill, with their family Rose A 19 born Greenway Bank , Albert 17 a coal miner , Harold 12, Isabella 9 and Lily A (Lillian?), 7 all born in Goldenhill. 1901 John, 58 a labourer at the color works is living at Little Colclough, 3, Goldenhill with his wife Isabella 56, his son Harold, 22, a coal miner waggoner, his daughter Lilian, 16 a potter's paintress, his daughter in-law Clara, 21, wife of Ernest. Clara is described as supported by war fund and Isabella, 10 month old grandaughter born in goldenhill (likely the child of Clara and Ernest). 1911 John, aged 70, a chemical worker who was born in Cheddleton is living at Little Colclough, Goldenhill with his wife of 46 years, Isabell, 60 born in Longnor. They have had 9 children in total, 8 of whom are still living. They have Enos Sambrook and his family boarding with them. Enos Sambrook is his son-in-law married to his daughter Lilian Alice Knott, and 8 month old Doris Irene is his granddaughter. Lilian Alice has lost one daughter, Alice who died as a baby.
