Aged 36 on marriage to Alice

James was probably born in Northamptonshire, the eldest son of his father's second marriage. His first trade was as a carpenter and joiner but later he became an electrical engineer installing power plants in country houses. On his father’s death James and his two brothers George and Herbert, the sons of James snr’s second marriage, took over the business.
