Birth registration in GRO online index gives his mothers previous married name rather than her maiden name 1861 - 1871 living with parents 1878 Married Sarah Ann Perry. Occupation on marriage: labourer. Father a plate layer. 1881 Richard, 22 year old labourer, born Frankwell, Salop living at 73 Sandyford, Tunstall with his wife Sarah A, 23, born Burslem, Staffordshire. (RG11/2711/100 p21) 1891 Richard,32, Ironstone miner - Living with wife Sarah 33 and children Mary 9, borm Tunstall and Thomas, 6 born Burlsem, at Copley Street, Tunstall. Also had visitor, Thomas Wall, 22 staying with them (RG1/2160/ 44 p23). Son Enoch was living with his grandparents. 1895 Ann, daughter of Richard and Sara Ann Davis of High Street, Sandyford was baptised at Christchurch Tunstall. Note spelling of the name (no e) and it is surprising that Richard's occupation is given as potter (most likely a mistake). 1901 census - Coalminer (Hewer) - aged 42 living at 19 Upper Cartlick Street, Sandyford, Tunstall with wife Sarah Ann, 42 and children, Mary 19 a potter's warehouse worker, Thomas 16, a blacksmith's apprentice (Mary's son Horace later became a blacksmith), Enoch 14 a miner, James 7 and Anne, 5. 1911, now gives his age as 50 and his occupation as miner pit sinker. Living at 49(?) Moorland View, Fegg Hayes with his wife Sarah Ann, aged 51 and their children James 18 a horse driver (in the pit) and Ann, 16, a velvet cutter in the fustian works. Both Children were born in Tunstall. Sarah was born in Longport, Burslem and Richard in Shrewsbury. Salop. Census says Richard and Sarah had been married for 20 years but this must be wrong as they were married in 1878 (marriage certificate) and so would have been married 32 years. They had a visitor, Elsie Taylor,12 from Manchester. |
