Shared note

Most likely born in last quarter of 1886. Wolstanton 1886 Q4 6b 105.

1891 Aged three, born Tunstall, living with grandparents Ann 56 and Thomas 48 a coal pit carpenter from Shrewsbury (step grandfather) at 40 Newfield, Tunstall (Christchurch parish). Also living with them is Thomas's neice, Lillian M O Lewis 15, born Shresbury, a potters paintress and a lodger Jane Victory, 64 year old widowed Laundress, born Montford, Salop. She is likely to be Jane Davies, Enochs great aunt. (RG12/2159/106 p4)

1901 census aged 14 living with parents at 19 Upper Cartlick Street, Sandyford. Coal miner, driver below ground

1905 Q2 married Rhoda Davies (was she any relation?). Birth of a Rhoda Davies was registered Q1 1884 Wolstanton 6b/142, mother's maiden name Austin - could this be her? She was baptised at Christchurch, Tunstall on 9 April 1884, parents James and Ada Davies - could this be the James Davies mentioned below, born about 1858? Possibly Arnold's grandfather? James Davies and Ada Austin were married at St Paul's Burslem on 4 June 1876

1911 Aged 25 living at 46 East terrace, Stoke on Trent with his wife of 5 years, Rhoda. They have two children Arnold 2 and Florence 2 months. He is a coal hewer.

1921 It appears that Enoch and Rhoda were each visiting different families on the day of the census.

Rhoda, aged 36yrs 3 mths was visiting the family of William Jones 38yrs 10mths, an engine man slack crusher at Birchenwood Colliery Co Ltd, Kidsgrove and his wife Florence, 35 yrs 11mths a muffin maker at Johnson Bros, Alexandra Pottery, Tunstall. Florence is Florence Grocott. They married 1906 Q2 Wolstanton 6b/167.

Enoch 34 yrs 9 mths, coal miner hewer working at Newdigate Colliery, Warwickshire, was visiting the family of William Thomas Smallwood, 57yrs 2mth a potters printer of Tunstall working at Dunn Bennett & Co, Burslem and his wife Rhoda 55yrs 6mths. (Maiden name of the mother of William Thomas Smallwood born in 1895 was Grocott. Is it possible that Rhoda isn't the mother of the children although in 1911 they say they were married for 17 years giving DoM 1894)
With Enoch is 7 year old Ada Davies (7yrs and 9 mths).

Obituary Rhoda Smallwood, wife of late William Thomas Smallwood died on 31st May 1938 aged 71 years. The obituary appeared in Evening Sentinel on 2 June 1938. She had still lived at 22 Bank Street Tunstall and was to be burried in Tunstall Cemetery following funeral service at Bank Street Methodist Church on Saturday (presumable the next Saturday from 2nd June 1938).

Arnold Davies, 14 years, born Tunstall, Staffordshire a full time school student (both parents still living), described as son, is with 63 year old James Davies from Tunstall, Staffordshire, an unemplyed miner described as visitor at 8 Mill Street, Bedworth, Warwickshire. Neither of Arnold's parents is present - as above they are visiting friends/relatives in Staffordshire.

Who is James Davies (Dob about 1858, Tunstall, Staffordshire)? It is most likely that James Davies is Arnold's maternal grandfather.

Unable to find Florence May in 1921. Did she die as an infant in 1912

Note,
One of William T and Rhoda Smallwood's children, Elliot, a potters printer, was killed in a road traffic accident when he was 18 years old. He was riding his bicycle down Newcastle Street in Burslem when it is thought his wheel become stuck in a tram track and he collided with a lorry. The report of the inquest was in the Sentinel of 19th November 1920.
