Did she marry James Fox? Subsequent census entries link Mary Ann and James Fox to the Cooper family. Most likely death registration is Mary A Fox 1934 Stoke on Trent aged 90 (dob approx 1844) - not confirmed. 1921 Mary Ann, 77 is living with her brother Simeon, 75 and also widowed, at 55 Alexander Road, Oakhill, Stoke on Trent. 1911 Mary Ann Fox is 67 and widowed. She is lodging with Benjamin Mould, 50 a colliery engine winder man from Mow Cop and his wife Sarah Jane 50 from Talke oth Hill, at 62 Alfred Street, Hanley. Benjamin and Sarah Jane have been married for 28 years and had two children, both of whom are still living. The original census entry says that Mary Ann is a relative of the Moulds although it has been crossed out and “boarder” written in. Sarah Jane is almost certainly Mary Ann’s sister. 1901 Mary Ann Fox, 57 is widowed and living with her sister, Sarah Jane Mould and her husband Benjamin at 62 Alfred Street, Hanley. With them are their two children Louisa and Enoch. In 1891 Mary Cooper, niece aged 16 is living with Mary Ann, 50 and James Fox 53 Inn Keeper, The Boat House Stubbs Gate Newcastle under Lyme. Mary is probably Daniel’s daughter. In 1881 a Sarah Ann Cooper, 14 of Talke oth Hill is living at 1 Stubbs Gate, Newcastle with Mary Ann 36 from Talk o’th’Hill and James Fox 39 from Haslington, Cheshire. Sarah Ann is described as “niece” suggesting she is the daughter of one of Mary Ann’s brothers. In 1871 Sarah Ann,4 is living with her grandparents John Hancock, 59 a coal miner in Audley and his wife Ann 54. Sarah Ann Cooper, neice of Mary Ann, is the daughter of her brother Daniel and his first wife Mary Hancock: [ Are these also related? William Cooper married Emma Hancock on 18th Dec 1865 in Northwood. Who is William, is he related to Mary Ann and how? Maybe cousin. His father is Charles Cooper and Emma’s father is Edwin Hancock] Mary Ann was baptised at St Martin’s Talke on 24th November 1861. It gives her date of birth as 28th March 1844 (although this may be wrong - BMD suggests 1845). The baptism entry records Isaac and Sarah as her parents, so this is evidence lining her to Daniel as his sister. A number of Isaac and Sarah’s other children were all baptised on the same day (all as young adults or children, not babies). It suggests they all joined the church together. It had been thought they were originally methodists. Daniel’s first wife was Mary Hanckock, daugther of John Hancock, - is it possible that Daniel and Mary also had a daugher, Sarah Ann who moved to live with her grandparents following her mother’s death? Yes - Birth registration index corroborates this - see above. 1871 James Fox 30, joiner from Haslington, Cheshire is living with his wife Mary Ann 26 from Talk o’ th’ Hill at Church Street, Audley. RG10/2837/14 p 21. Are these any relation? In 1891 a widowed James Cooper, coal miner aged 62 from Kidsgrove is lodging with Ralph 67 and Hannah 62 Hancock in Taylor Street, Tunstall. Ralph is a retired potter’s printer from Furlong Lane and Hannah is from Talk oth Hill. |
