1851 and 1861 Simeon is living with parents Isaac and Sara - see Isaac's details 8th September 1867 Staffordshire Sentinel and Commercial & General Advertiser Page 6 Police Intelligence reports. Simeon is charged with lighting a match to fire shot in the colliery in which he works. This was a serious offence (because of significant risk of explosion and danger to life -there had been a serious explosion some time earlier int he same maine) and Simeon had been taught how properly to fire shot using a wire. He was a trusted worker. The person who had accused him, Robinson, had not long worked in that colliery having moved into the area. He also had a grievance against Isaac Cooper, Simeon’s father, who had accused him of slacking in his work. No other witnesses could be found to corroborate the evidence and the charges were dropped. 1871 Simeon (24) was living with his wife Emily (23) and their son Henry 3 at Bridge Street in Silverdale. Also living with them was his brother Daniel. Daniel and Simeon were coal miners. Writing on census is difficult to decipher, but it looks as though Daniel is listed as a widower. Jesse appears to be missing from this entry although he appears aged 12 on the next census in 1881 1881 Aged 34 working as Coal and ironstone miner, living at Turnhurst with wife Emily, 33, and sons Jesse (12) and Fred (8 months) and daughter Lilias (8) 1891 Simeon is living at 160 Victoria Road, Fenton now aged 44 and a mining contractor - an employer . Also living there are Simeon's mother Sarah (68? a widow), his wife Emily, 43 his sons Jess (22 a coal miner) and Fred (9? - surely 10 - a scholar) and his daughter Sarah, 5 a scholar, and niece Jane Nixon 11 a scholar. 1901 Aged 55 and working as a coalpit G...r, now living at 201 Keelings Road, Hanley with wife Emily 54 and son Fred, 21 a coalminer, and daughter Sarah, 16 an apprentice tailortress. His son Jesse, now married lives next door 1911 1921 Simeon Cooper, widower, 75 born in parish of Audley Staffordshire is living at 55 Alexander Road, Oakhill, Stoke on Trent. He is a retired mine worker who worked on contract at Fenton mine. With his is 77 year old Mary Ann Fox, described as his house keeper and is most likely his sister. She is also widowed and was born in parish of Audley. |
