Birth 1755
Joshua was born on 31st July 1755 and christened on 23 Aug 1755. He was the son of Joshua & Ann Jenour, of Serjeants' Inn, Fleet Street (London: Temple Church - Register of Baptisms 1629-1853 & Marriages 1628-1760.
1755
County: London
Country: England
23 Aug 1755 Joshua, s. of Joshua & Ann Jenour, of Serjeants' Inn, Fleet Street, born 31 Jul 1755. R.

Admitted to freedom of city 1776
Joshua son of Joshua, a stationer, was admitted to Freedom of City of London by way of patrimony, in 1776 his father having been admitted in 1736. The admission document was signed by his uncles Mathew and Thomas.

Married 1783-85
Joshua married Harriet Andrewes. The parish records show
"Suffolk: Sudbury - Marriage Licences, 1782-1814

Joshua Jenour, of Croydon, Surrey, esq., s. m., & Harriet Andrews, s. w., of Flempton, married at Furnes, in French Flanders, remarried at Fl[empton]

Furnes is now Belgium

Marriage licence issued in Suffolk 28th March 1785. This is presumably for their remarriage in Flempton.

Boyd's inhabitants of London: Joshua Jenour son of Joshua Jenour born about 1724 and Mary Harding married to Harriette Andrews daughter of Robert Andrewes. Joshua (1755) is described as a Master of the Stationers Co. and Manager and proprietor of the Daily Advertiser. . He had a large family and his children are listed:
1 Joshua (the details given for this son appear to be those of his father: born 1755 died 1853, heir to his uncle Matthew and an author).
2 Harriet
3 Charlotte
4 Matthew
5 Thomas
6 Charles
7 Henry
8 Sydney
9 Alfred

According to trade directories Joshua lived at 33 Fleet Street, London for many years.

Joshua re-married after his first wife, Harriet's death and went on to have more children.
Marriages:
Spouse: AMELIA STACY
Marriage: 08 OCT 1824 Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England
IGI Batch M047931

There is census entry of a Joshua Jenour living in Eden Place, Gravesend in 1841 but he is only 70-74 years old and this too young to be this Joshua, the age in the census is likely to be wrong, as subsequent evidence suggests this is indeed Joshua’s 2nd family. Family is Henry 25, Amelia 10, Laura 20 and Amelia 40. (HO107/460/9 p12). The informant listed on Joshua’s death certificate is Laura of the same address at Gravesend in Kent. The ages of the children suggest Henry and Laura were either his step children or born before he and Amelia were married.

Entry in dictionary of National Biography:
Joshua Jenour, 1755 -1853 miscellaneous writer, eldest son of Joshua Jenour, master of the Stationer’s Company and one of the proprietors and manager of the Daily Advertiser. He was born on 31st July 1755 at Serjeant’s Inn Fleet Street. He joined the Company of Stationers in 1776 but after receiving a large fortune from his uncle, Matthew Jenour, he never engaged in business and spent his long life engaging in literary pursuits. He died in Gravesend on 23 Jan 1853.

In some of his obituaries (and on his death certificate) he was described as 102 year old centenarian and his year of birth given as 1852, but this appears to be a mistake. He was also refered to as Sir Joshua Jenour - so when did he receive his honour?

"Joshua was a "miscellaneous writer" and the
descendant of the Jenour family that founded and ran the London Daily
Advertiser in the 18th century. He was rather profligate and spent a
very very large fortune (10,000 p.a. which is what Mr Darcy has in
Pride and Prejudice) so that the family was penniless by about 1810. " Elaine, decendant of Alfred Jenour

PARISH GOVERNMENT AND POOR RELIEF

From: 'Chigwell: Parish government and poor relief', A History of the County of Essex: Volume 4: Ongar Hundred (1956), pp. 37-8. URL: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=15543.

"In 1792 one of the overseers was Joshua Jenour, a well-known author and pamphleteer and a man of advanced views. (fn. 16) In that year he planned to build a pest-house out of the poor rates. As he had not consulted either his fellow officers or the vestry, the churchwardens ordered him to desist. He moved a resolution at a subsequent vestry meeting that the house should be built, but this was defeated. Among his supporters were three local doctors, while the opposition came mainly from the farmers and larger ratepayers. In 1794 the vestry supported a plan proposed by John Conyers for the relief of the poor of the hundreds of Ongar, Harlow, and Waltham, but later withdrew support. In 1795 the high price of flour was met by subsidizing from the rates the bread bought by the poor from local bakers, and by the agreement of the wealthier inhabitants to use flour from which 7 lb. bran a bushel had been extracted. In 1800 it was decided to provide the poor with substitutes for flour, mainly rice and potatoes, and the ratepayers were urged to use similar substitutes themselves."

Note: the account above certainly fits with the titles of some of Joshua’s published writing; “A plan for Meliorating the Conditions of the Labouring Poor” and “An Exposition of the treatment in private Mad-houses”.

ELEY'S PATENT WIRE CARTRIDGE
Another reference to Joshua Jenour:
Eley's Patent Wire Cartridge
W.S.CURTIS - - 2002 http://www.researchpress.co.uk/firearms/ammunition/ammwirecart.htm
"The term 'Cartridge' in the context of the muzzle loading era did not always mean 'a complete round with powder'. In shotgun terms, it meant a package containing the shot charge and possibly the wadding which could be loaded intact onto the powder charge already in the barrel. This formerly meant a simple paper wrapped package of shot. It was thought that the degree of scatter from shot barrels was too great and the pre-packaging tended to reduce scatter by protecting the shot pellets lying next to the bore from being rubbed along it and deformed. Thought was given to the idea of trying to extend the range of shot by keeping it together for some distance from the muzzle. The first patent recorded for the so-called Wire Cartridge was that of Joshua Jenour, Patent No. 5570 of November 28, 1827. 'The Cartridge is made of wire, woven with meshes so wide as to allow the shot to be scattered'. The Patent was bought and developed by Eley Brothers, the London firm who made percussion caps, and who then marketed their Patent Wire Cartridge for muzzle loading guns. The first published accounts of this new idea appear in the 1830 (6th Edition) of Colonel Peter Hawker's INSTRUCTIONS TO YOUNG SPORTSMEN, IN ALL THAT RELATES TO GUNS AND SHOOTING, London 1830 (Riling 373). Hawker found that the wire mesh was too fine and too stiff causing, in a percentage of the shots fired, a failure to disperse the shot from the package thus causing it to become a dangerous solid projectile. Hawker's book was also published in the USA in an abbreviated form with an appendix on American hunting and shooting by William T. Porter (Philadelphia 1846). The report on the Wire Cartridge in this edition has been abbreviated too much to make a lot of sense."

According to wikipedia the patent holder was Joshua Jenour, born 1755 and former manager of the Daily Advertiser.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eley_Brothers

Is the cartridge maker Joshua 1755 or another member of the family? The London Journal of Arts and Sciences vol 13, 1827 via Google Books on p221, has piece “Shot Cartridge, invented by Mr Joshua Jenour, jun, of William Street, Hampstead Row. It gives transcription of letter sent to the society by Joshua together with a description of the invention. Might this have been a younger member of his family, his son for example?

This Joshua had a daughter Louisa Jenour who married Richard Upton, a 40 year old dancing master on 13th June 1841 at All Soul’s Church, Marylebone, Westminster. Louise was 23, both bride and groom were previously unmarried. Louisa’s father is Joshua Jenour a cartridge maker. Richard’s father is also named Richard and a dance Master. Louisa is most likely Joshua’s daughter with his second wife Amelia. Louisa was born about 1818 (making her 23 in 1841) before they were married, while his former wife Harriet was still living.

Boyd's Marriage index records marriage in 1785 (at least from on-line index). This is the "remarriage" in Flempton.
