Matthew Jenour was admitted to the Freedon of London on 1st August 1699 (presumably when he was 21 years old) through the company of Stationers. His sons were later admitted through his patronimy. He himself was admitted through Servitude, after being apprenticed to his father John from 1 Aug 1692. His brothers John (22 Dec 1691) and Lancelot (1707) were admitted through Patrimony of their father John, although Lancelot was apprenticed to his brother Mathew on 7 April 1701. Mathew Jenour, stationer of Giltspur Street appears in poll books. In 1727 he appears (page 177) listed under “A list of such Liverymen as did not poll at last election” Entry in the burials register for the parish records for St Sepulchre, Holborn, 28th April 1837 says Mathew Jenour of Giltspur Street, in church. Christening record of a Mathew Jenour identifies parents as John and Joan Jenour. This is likely to be correct because the same parents also christen a son Lancelott who also becomes a printer and is linked to both Mathew (as brother) and John (as father) in the Records of London’s Livery companies. Lancelot Jenour, listed in the directory of members of the London book trade (1701-1800) and he is listed as a stationers apprentice. He was apprenticed to his brother Mathew. Lancelott Jenour, parents John and Joan chr 22 Jan 1681 St Andrew’s by the Wardrobe, London died 1 Oct 1682 C022322 In addition to the vicar general marriage allegation showing Matthew’s intention to marry Mary Mead, there is a parish record for the following day recording marriage between William Jenour and Mary Mead! Presumably one is incorrect. See http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/facsimiles/1710s/171812050002.html for copy of Old Bailey Proceedings, 5th December, 1718 printed by M Jenour Lived at Ball Court, Giltspur Street, London. This is the address recorded in his burial record. |
