Shared note

Parish record of his baptism says he was “privately baptised”.

Possible marriage for Joshua Jenour is
Spouse: Mary Wingrove
Date: 26 November 1810
Place: Westbury on Trim, Gloucestershire

Name Wingrove is common to the house companion of one of his sisters.
Baptism record for Sydney Jenour, born 1813 baptised 13 June 1828 shows she is the daughter of Joshua Jenour and Mary Wingrove.
Later in 1840 Joshua’s brother Henry, a vicar, makes the marriage announcement for Sydney Jenour, daughter of late Joshua Jenour which fits with Joshua having died in 1838 and the records of his arrest for vagrancy reporting that his brother, a vicar in Devon, says the family is careing for his wife and child(ren).

Alternative - it is possible he married again

Marriages:
Spouse: MARGARET BRAMSTON
Marriage: 15 SEP 1823 Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England
IGI Batch M047931

Age on burial record is given as 53
There is a death registration for Joshua Jenour in West London in Q4 1838, which would have made him 55 if born in 1783. Ref vol 2 p190
The burial record is 14th October 1838 Hoxton St John, Hackney. He was brought from Britannia Street.

Marriage
His marriage was announced in Bristol Mirror on 8th Dec 1810: the marriage of Joshua Jenour Jun at Westbury to Miss Wingrove of Paul Street.

The next announcement is of the death of Leiut Cole, 22 son of Thos. Cole of this city of His Majesty’s 12th reg who died when the vessel, Lord Nelson, he was on returning to Europe for the benefit of his health was wrecked of the Cape of Good Hope and all on board perished.

This juxtoposition of announcements is interesting as Thomas Jenour married Mary Cole in 1813. Were both announcements made by the same family.

Vagrancy
A case file from 1837, shows that Jenour, who was assessed as capably of better things but of falling into bad habits including drink had been arrested for vagrancy and begging in London on 21st March 1837. He had been previously arrested on 15th/16th June 1834 and warned & released after securing references, then again on 19th Feb 1835 when he was relieved with 6d from the poor box, warned and discharged. This time, on 22nd June 1837 he was sentenced to one month imprisonment. He subsequently pettitioned the secretary of state at the home office, by letter dated 3rd July, from prison where he had been for 12 days, pleading that he was from a respectable family and had money but had found himself in unusual circumstances - citing various relatives an ancestory in an attempt to establish his own respectabilty and access to funds.

The report of the investigation into his petition (sent July 7th 1837) besides relating the above record based on sworn statements from the constables mentions his respectable family, his brother had been contacted and had said Joshua “was a very extravagant man and was very much given to drink” and “that his relations were tired of relieving him”, “that Joshua had a wife and family who were maintained by his relations”.
The register of petitions shows that his was received on 5th July and that the outcome was ‘Nil” which I assume mean it failed.

Death: family record is that he died in St Bartholomew’s hospital
