Some doubt that the details here and occupation as a vicar are correct for Henry, son of Joshua and Harriet. The ages and dated match but an obituary report in the Hampstead and Highgate Express of 22 March 1890 casts some doubt on it. 1822 - Henry Jenour is listed as vicar in Epperstone, Notts. We know that Albert Jenour mentioned one of his brothers went to Epperstone after returning from India. Did he go there because his brother was the vicar? He is described as Rector of Epperston in the newspaper announcement of his marriage to Caroline, youngest daughter of late William Smelt, Rector of Gedling. Pigot’s Commercial Directory of Derbyshire, 1835 lists Rev Henry Jenour as the vicar in Belper. 1841 Was a clerk, aged 47 living at Frederick Place, Melcombe Regis, Weymouth with wife Caroline aged 45 and children Caroline 18, Mary 17, Henry 17, William 14, Margaret 11 and Albert 1 (HO107/295/17 13p24&25) 1851 Aged 57, incumbent of Portland, Dorset (Weymouth district), born Chigwell Row, Essex, with wife Caroline 55 the clergyman's wife from Gedling Notts and their children Caroline A, 28, Henry C 25, William K 24, Margaret E 21 and Albert ECS 11. Albert was born in Weymouth, Dorset. All the others were born in Epperstone, Notts. (HO107/1857/542 p24) 1861, Aged 67 Incumbent of St John's, Portland born Chigwell living at Fortunes Well with wife Caroline, 65, Caroline A unmarried, 38, living with father, Margaret Lander (daughter), 31 and her children George 8, Albert 5. Son William K Jenour,34 unmarried landholder was visiting. There were servants John Hicker, 41 and his wife Ann 40 and daughter 14 from Stoke Cannon, Devon. (RG9/1351/26 p5) 1871, Still living at Fortunes Well, Portland, Dorset now aged 77 and Vicar of St Johns lvining (or staying with) his daughter Margaret Lander, 41 and his grandchildren George Lander 18 born Kensal Green, London, Philip Lander 9 also Kensal Green, MAry Lander 6 born Portland and Margaret Jenour (granddaughter) 19 born Portland. His wife was not present but Henry is still recorded as married and not widowed. (RG10/2005/36 p17) 1871 Caroline Jenour was listed as wife living at 5 Dorset Place, parish of St John's, Dorset, aged 75, annuitant. With her are Caroline A, 44 still unmarried and William K, aged 40(49), now widowed. (RG10/1999/55 p12) Henry died in Weymouth in Q3 1874 aged 81. - Is this correct? Parish recod of his burial at St John’s parish church, Portland, Dorset notes that he was 81 and vicar of the parish. There is a newpaper announcement in Hampstead & Highgate Express of 22 March 1890 which reads: “ We regret to announce the death of Mr Henry James Jenour of Belsize Square, on Wednesday 12th inst at Southend. The deceased gentleman was the son of Sir Joshua Jenour who lived to be over 100 years of age, and who resided for many years at Heath House, now occupied by Sir Algenon Borthwick Bart, M.P.” If this announcement is Henry then he would have been 92 years old. It doesn’t mention he was a vicar. Is the Henry that was a vicar from a different branch of the family. An index to wills and probate lists Henry Jenour of Portland as testator and Rev Albert Hill of Preston as his executor. The transcription gives year of death as 1880 but this isn’t obvious from the image. The extract from the register is: Reverend Henry Jenour, personal estate under £100. 13th November. The will of the Reverend Henry Jenour, late of Portland in the county of Dorset clerk vicar of St John’s church Portland who died 27 Sept 1874 at Portland was proved at Blandford by the Rev Arthur Hill of Preston in county of Dorset Clerk the surviving Executor. Newpaper articles of around 1840 identify an H.J Jenour as a high baliff. In May 1849 Henry James Jenour of Greys Inn is listed as taking out a General Game Certificate, so if this Henry James Jenour is the son of Joshua and Harriet, the one identified as a vicar is not correct. |
