1851 Joseph Scatliff 44 a cottager of 40 acres from Carlton, Linc and his wife Catherine, 50 from Brant Broughton are living at Brant Broughton with their 14 year old daughter Sarah and a number of lodgers. HO107/2136/269 Page: 2 1861 Catherine 61 is living at Hight Street, Brant Broughton with her husband Joseph, 54 a cottager and their unmarried daughter Sarah 22. Also with them is a grandson, Jospeh aged 4. All except Joseph snr were born in Brant Broughton. Joseph was born in Calrton le Moorland. They have a servant, Charles Knight 18 a carter, and two lodgers. (Joseph jnr is likely to be Joseph Smith Scatliff who was married to Mary Allister in 1885 (Q3 Newark 7b 559) and whose birth was registered in Newark 1857 Q2 7b 303. RG9/2477/57 Page: 25 1871 Living at Farm Cottage, Brant Broughton, Catherine Scatliff, 70 with Joseph her husband 64, cottager of 44 acres and landowner, with daughter Sarah 33 and grandson Joseph S 14. Also Richard Smith 65 listed as boarder. Likely to be Catherine’s brother. 1881 Catherine 80, from Brant Broughton is living with her husband Joseph Scatliff, 74 a farmer of 53 acres employing one man, from Carlton, Lincs. With them are Sarah their unmarried daughter aged 44 described as imbecile and Joseph S, 24 grandson, Richard Smith 74, brother (presumably of Catherine) a widowed Yardman and a 16 year old servant George Hallam.
