Shared note

It appears that Hannah was not baptised as a baby, but when she was 19 years old. Was this because she wanted to get married or had had a child of her own and wanted to have it baptised?

Both she and her younger sister Harriet were baptised at the same time.

There is a record of banns of marriage for Hannah Davis, born 1852, parents Mathew and Harriet Davis dated 28 August 1871 in Hanley. This is the same day as the baptism, so maybe it was a requirement to be baptised before marriage.

1873 Marriage: Nearest match for marriage record is for Anna Davis age 21, 8th February 1873, Cobridge, to James Colclough. Father is identified as Matthew Davis, James’ father is named as William Salt and James’ year of birth is given as 1852. (Wolstanton 1873 Q1 6B 138). Her residence was given as Bleak Hill and his as Hill Street. William Salt is a collier and Matthew Davis a crate maker. The witnesses were John Davis and Harriet Walley. These are both siblings of Hannah (Anna). Reference to the father, his occupation and her siblings as witnesses confirm this is the correct marraige record.

Interestingly Harriet Walley is the only one who signed her own name. The others made their mark.

In subsequent census returns she is named as Hannah Colclough, wife of James.

1881, both Hannah and James are 29 and living at North Road Burslem. Her place of birth is given as Burslem and his, Tunstall. His occupation is puddler. They have five children: Ernest, 7 and Hannah 5, both scholars and Ruth 3, James 1 and Peter 1 month old. The older two children were born in Tunstall, the younger three in Burslem.

Checking the GRO birth index the maiden name of the mother in the family above is Collins, so it it not the family of Hannah Davies.

1891 his age now given as 39 and hers as 38. They are living at 11 Windmill Street, Hanley. James is now occuppied as a coal miner. They have a boarder, Elizabeth Bowden 38 year old laundress, single and from Detton, Derbyshire. Also with them is Gertrude Wally, 7 born in Hanley and identified as their neice.

Gertrude Walley is the daughter of Hannah's sister, Harriet and her husband Samuel.

This is the correct couple but I have not found any of their own children

1901 Aged 49 and 48, James is now a colliery fireman below (ground). They are still living at 11 Windmill Street, Hanley and boarding with them is 24 year old Robert Gibbins a coal loader below (ground) from Rugely. They also have an adopted daughter, 9 year old Emma Bryan, scholar.

1911 James aged 59 is widowed. He is still living at 11 Windmill Street and his occupation is miner labourer below ground. With him is his 19 year old daughter, Emmie, single dressmaker. He also has a boarder, Henry Colclough, 44 single and a “glost placer” in the pottery industry. They were all born in Hanley, Northwood area. Is Emmie, their adopted daughter Emma Bryan?
