Also known as Mollie. It is said that when her mother died she ended up in the work house - a fact for which she never forgave her father Samuel. However, the note from her daughter Olga indicates that Mollie was taken in by her Grandmother, Mrs Knott (Sarah Dawson). This is backed up by the 1881 census information. 1881 census : Mary, aged 12, is living at The Folly, Cheddleton with her widowed grandmother Sarah Knott (nee Dawson).

(RG12/3055). Luke is a refreshment caterer. 1901 Mary Ellen, now 32, is married to William Sinclair 31 a tea warehousman from Whitehaven, Cumberland. Her birth place is given as Congleton; although this is wrong it suggests that the family may have lived in Congleton during her childhood.They are still living in Wigan and have two daughters, Olga 5 and Ena 1 month old, both born in Wigan.
