Married Sept 26th 1854 aged 19. Bridget could not read and write and signed birth registration of her daughter Sarah with an X. Census records show Bridget living with her husband Michael Burke and their family from 1871 to 1901. She worked as a dressmaker. 1911 there is a Bridget Burke, 70, inmate, married at Cobridge Road (same as Michael), had had 10 children 5 still living, occupation housekeeper but gives place of birth as Ireland, Westport (which is a town in Mayo). The age is wrong, is should be more like 75 or 76, but still most likely to be Michael’s wife. Note: I have found reference to birth of Bridget Lyons born 1832 in Ireland - parents Edward Lyons and Marie McKilroe - IGI, but no one with father Redmond, and birth in 1832 makes her slightly older than expected. In 1811 Bridget gives her place of birth as Westport. Irish records show the baptism of a Redmond Lyons, father Rednd and mother Bridget of Cloonskill on 24 Jan 1839 in the parish of Aughagower, diocese of Taum, country Mayo. This could be her brother and parents although I can’t find similar record for Bridget herself. Aughagower is 6km from Westport and 3.5km from Cloonskill. So far this is the closes match to finding Bridget’s family in Mayo. The Griffith land valuation shows a Philip and Anthony Lyons still in Cloonskill in the 1940s. |
