James was a widower when he married Mary Ann (parish register entry 222 St Mary’s parish Manchester 1 Sept 1822) Both identified as from Manchester and his occupation was joiner. Married by banns (no consent needed suggests both were at least 21 years old). The witnesses were Abraham Chappell and Robert Smith (Clerk).

1841 living at Chorlton on Medlock. Joiner aged 40-44. With Mary same age, Edwin apprentice engineer 15-19 and John 15-19. Could be brothers of Emma Ellen. But where is Emma Ellen, she would be about 13, and where is William who would be about 11? (James's occupation matched that on Emma's marriage certificate from 1949 and adds confidence that this is the correct family.

William may have died but we know that Emma was still alive- William had died as a baby

Possible death records for James Axon
1859 Q4 Chorlton, Lancs 8c 303 (no age)
1865 Q1 CHorlton, Lancs 8c 380 (no age)
1867 Q2 Salford 8d 19 aged 69 - birth therefore about 1798 consistent with census information above, but location slightly different than last known address.
A newpaper announcement of this death says:
Axon: May 20th 1867 aged 69 years, Mr James Axon, Lower Broughton, late of Chorlton-on-Medlock

According to burial records for Manchester James Axon died on 20 May 1867, aged 69 and his wife Mary Ann died on 1 December 1846 aged 45.

Did he marry again for a third time after Mary Ann's death? Possible third marriage to Jane Royle, 25th May 1848 in Manchester.
1861 James Axon, 63, born in Rochdale, was living in Broughton with his wife Jane, aged 68, born in Urmston, - this matches on age and location to the one mentioned in the burual records, but his occupation was given as letter carrier and not joiner. However, the burial records for the family grave (3037) in Rusholme Road Cemetery, Chorlton-on-Medlock mention Jane as wife of James (in addition to Mary Ann). Jane died 8 January 1869 aged 76. This age fits.

The grave also mentions William Axon who died aged 68 in 1828 and a Charlotte Jane Axon who died aged 4 on 24 December 1858. She is described as the daughter of John and Charlotte Axon.

Parish baptism records show a James Axon baptised on 27 November 1797 at Rochdale, parents William and Betty Axon. Transcript only but this is a reasonable match - on age, location and father's name. A William Axon and Betty Hibert were married by banns in Rochdale on 17 March 1779. They were both of the parish and the witnesses were Thomas Lees and James Bennett.

An Elizabeth Hibert was baptised on 29 Jan 1764 in Manchester, parents John and Esther, but this would mean she would have been only 15 or 16 years old at marriage.

Did William Axon have a brother James? A James Axon married Martha Bennett on 17 June 1775 in Manchester. Was the witness at William and Betty's wedding, William's brother in law?
