Marriage

Marriage
I have found two marriage records in the IGI. The first is:
William BANKS
Sex: M

Marriage(s):
Spouse: Ann FIELDS
Marriage: 24 Nov 1774
Tettenhall, Stafford, England

I have been able to confirm this is correct from marriage entry in the parish records . The parish register shows that the witnesses to this marriage were Ann Harris and Samuel Fletcher, both signing their own dame as did the bride and groom.

and the second (almost certainly inaccurate) is:
William BANKS
Sex: M

Marriage(s):
Spouse: Ann HARPER
Marriage: 1794
Codsall, Stafford, England

Pat and Ray confirm this was been submitted by a family member and it may be inaccruate confusing two branches of the famiy. See the notes from Pat and Ray below. Also I have been unable to find this in the copies of the parish records available on line, although the records for Codsall are available, so I agree with Pat and Ray that Ann Fields was the most likely wife and mother of the Banks family.

The IGI also threw up a birth record for Ann Harper, spouse of William Banks

Ann HARPER
Sex: F

Event(s):
Birth: 1755
Codsall, Stafford, England

Marriage(s):
Spouse: William BANKS

I have been unable to match this to the parish register but found an Ann Harper, daughter of Henry Harper baptised on 15 September 1753 at Wolverhampton

Death
Burial of William Banks of Kingswood in the parish of Tettenhall, Staffordshire was recorded in the parish record of Codsall parish on 28 March 1834, his age given as 83.

Looking for children of William and Ann, the IGI gives:

Ann BANKS
Sex: F

Event(s):
Birth: 1782
Codsall, Stafford, England

Parents:
Father: William BANKS
Mother: Ann HARPER

and several others births registered to William Banks and Ann Harper before their wedding date, but for the baptism of Ann Banks the Codsall parish register itself only says 22 September, Ann, daughter of William and Ann Banks of Kingswood. So it is unclear where the reference to Harper given in the IGI entry was found.

Searching the parish records for children of William Banks and his wife Ann return:
William 1776, Jane 1778 (Wolverhampton) , Mary 1778 (Tettenhall Regis), Ann 1782, Elizabeth 1790, John 1793 and William 1796 other than mentioned baptised at Codsall. For each of these the parish register records the family being from Kingswood, so it appears that the children baptised at Codsall are siblings and the children of William and Ann.

The following is from Pat and Ray Banks who have investigated this further:
According to the church records in Spanish Fork,UT, the
parents of William Banks b. 1796 were William Banks and
Anne Fields. This was written while William Banks was
living, so we are sure it is correct.

Elizabeth Taylor's parents are John Taylor and Hannah Harper. I haven't been
able to determine who her parents were or when or where
John and Hannah were married. There is a John Taylor and
Ann Harper married in Rushall about the right time, but how
can you tell if it is the right one. The first information
you have about William Banks' birth came from the parish
records. The second with Ann Harper as his mother was
something one of their descendants compiled.
We think all the information on the Banks is correct. We
got it from parish records.

I still don't know what to think about Anne Fields parents. Thomas Fields and
Susannah Harper were married in Bridgnorth and Anne and her
brother John were christened in Shifnal. Then we find in
the Codsall parish records that Thomas Fields and Hannah
Fields and John Fields of Kingswood were all buried in
Codsall.(different years) Now I am confused. Are Susannah
and Hannah the same person or did Thomas marry Hannah after
Susannah died or is Susannah the wrong person? I looked at
the original parish records of Bridgnorth and Codsall again
to see if they could have mistaken Susannah for Hannah or
vice versa when they were transcribed, but they were both
as written.
There is one mistake in the book that I can think of right
now. We have them as coming to the US in 1848 and they
didn't come until 1849, and they were on a different ship
than the one we put. I believe it was called the Emblem.
