John Clowes married Mary Alcock in 1778. This is a likely connection. Dates fit and Ann Vigars (Vigers) was witness to marriage of Elizabeth Clowes and Joseph Simpson in 1804. Ann Vigers born 1786 (baptised Ipstones 17 May 1786) is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth. Elizabeth Alcock married Thomas Vigers on 29th March 1785. It is possible that Mary and Elizabeth Alcock are sisters (to be confirmed, so far no baptism record found for Mary) and that Elizabeth Clowes and Ann Vigers are cousins.

1841 A 55 year old Elizabeth Simpson, a washerwoman, is living with May (or Mary) Ball, 13 at Ipstones (HO107/1004/7). May Ball is likely to be Mary Ball, Elizabeth's granddaughter, the daughter of Thomas Ball and Catherines Simpson, born 1828. - This can’t be right because Mary Ball is with her parents in 1841 unless they registered her while she was away.

1851 A 65 year old widowed washerwoman living alone at Mill Street, Ipstones. (HO107/2009/174 p6). Born Ipstones.

1861 Now 75, living at School Green, Ipstones, with James Clowes, 44 a wood sawyer from Ipstones and his wife Eliza, 38 and their children John 12, an assistant sawyer, and Charles 5. Elizabeth is described as mother-in-law. All born in Ipstones. (RG9/1951/124 p17). This is interesting as Elizabeth Simpson's maiden name was also Clowes. From parish records she had two daughters named Eliza and Elizabeth. The first born in 1822 and the 2nd in 1825. The age (and form of name) given here suggests the elder.

Birth registration for the children, who would be her grandchildren/stepgrandchildren (James was widowed when Eliza married him oin 1855) are:
CLOWES, CHARLES SIMPSON

John is almost certainly the son of James's first wife and likely to be one of these
CLOWES, JOHN JOHNSON
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in CHEADLE Volume 17 Page 52 baptised 5 May 1848, parish baptism record identifies James as a sawyer of Isptones.

A James Clowes of Checkley married a Mary Johnson of Ipstones in Q4 1840 at Checkley. This is the most likely. Birth of an Olive Clowes was registered in 1848 Q2 Cheadle 17/55 and her mother's maiden name was Johnson. Olive died aged 2 and was buried at St Leonard's Churchyard, Ipstones on 18 June 1850.

A Mary Clowes was buried on 31 Jan 1854, aged 31 also at St Leonard's.

James Clowes could be the son of Robert and Margaret Clowes. He was christened in Ipstones on 4 June 1816 IGI C096841 His sister Alice was christened on 18 Oct 1818. Robert Clowes is probably the son of John Clowes and his wife Ellin. Robert was christened at Ipstones on 11 Mar 1787. John and Ellin Jeffries were married on 13 Jan 1780 in Ipstones. THIS JAMES CLOWES MARRIED MARY JOHNSON on 21 Dec 1840 at Ipstones.
