Parish records from Newcastle-uner-Lyme: William Marsh, married Ellen Cook of Bradhall in the parish of Wolstanton. It doesn't mention a place of residence for William, so presumably he was of the parish of St Giles, Newcastle.
While not completely confident that this is the father of William who married Mary Salt the age of William jnr and link through siblings, in particular, Ellen, Olive and Lettuce (see probate informaiton) gives fair degree of certainty that a couple William and Ellen are his parents. Less certain is whether this is the William who married Ellen and whether we have the right Ellen. Mother’s maiden name was not given on any if the baptism records, neither was the place of abode of the family.
Subsequent records for various generations of the Marsh family show they used St Margaret's parish Church, Wolstanton even when place of abode was elsewhere, e.g. Horton or Cheddleton. Does this imply some long standing connection with Wolstanton as they return there for key family events?
The burial entry in the Wolstanton parish register on 14 Aug 1802 gave age of deceased William Marsh as 82 producing estimated date of birth of 1720. It also identified the deceased William Marsh as of the parish of Cheddleton.
In 1783 a William Marsh, a master cordwainer, of Wolstanton engaged John Gallimore as an endentured apprentice. Is this any connection to the person we are seeking?
