Note: some records place birth and Christening in 1748 but if he was 82 at the time of his death he was born in 1747.
Based on evidence from the IGI William and Mary are the parents of William born in 1812. From the same index there is a record of William Marsh's marriage to Mary Salt in 1805 at Horton. The names and dates fit with those expected reasonably well. There were no other entries for Marsh in the expected location of Horton or surrounding areas.

Parish record entry for marriage of William Marsh and Mary Salt confirms marriage by licence on 21st June 1805. Although William is considerably older than Mary and almost 60 when he starts his family, his will confirms that this is indeed the correct William. His will, dated 10th June 1826 and proved on 29th April 1830 following his death on 24th Nov 1829, lists by name his five surviving children (all but Olive who predeceased him) who in 1826 he described as all minors. The William who died on 24 Nov 1829 was 82 years old.

William’s will only gives his place of residence as Brown Edge in the Parish of Horton but the probate issued to him in May 1827 in repect of his sister Ellen’s will names his place of residence as Burnfields, Brown Edge. This is consistent with the information from baptism parish record of St Michael’s Horton 14th September 1814 (No. 69) indicating his residence at the time of his daughter Lettuce’s baptism in 1814 as Burnfields and his occupation as farmer.

Also in 1814 an article in the Staffordshire Advertiser setting out decisions of the Comminssioner for including lands in the parish of Horton in the Country of Stafford twice mentions William Marsh. (Act, awards and maps should be available in the Staffordshire records office; catalogue reference D(W)1490/52; 3454/6A Q/RDc/69;D4069/5/1). These maps are now availble on line via Staffordshire Past track.

Papers awarding Administration to William natural brother of Lettice Marsh, late of Horton were issued on 27th october 1814. On the same day a virtually identical set of documents were also issued in respect of Olive Marsh, late of Wolstanton.

William left his entire estate, including any lands, estimated to be worth £200 to his children: share and share alike. He names his executors as George Holmes of Leek and John Marsh of Goldenhill, Lane End together with his eldest daughter Mary who would have been just 21 by the time of his death.

Are George Holmes and John Marsh relatives of William or Mary.

The will does not mention his wife and suggests that she has also predeceased him, which fits with the death of Mary in 1820.

William MARSH was buried 30 Nov 1829, the burial record from St Margaret's parish, Wolstanton gives his age 82, indicating a birth date in 1747. It also identifies him as William Marsh from Horton.

A notice in the Staffordshire Advertiser of 28 November 1829 announces his death "On 24th Inst at Burn Fields, near Nortin-in-theMoors, Mr William Marsh, farmer, aged 83.

IGI & parish records show children's christenings all linked to William Marsh and Mary Salt. Son William has right age and birth location to be the William living in Remer Street in 1891 with his son William.

The 1841 census shows that Burnfields is now occupied by Isaac Ainsworth 60, farmer, Jane Ainsworth 50, and Jane and Isaac both 20 and Elizabeth 15. Presumably husband, wife and children. Did they purchase the farm or are they tenants. Had William owned the farm?

An Isaac Ainsworth of Leek married Jane Bagshaw of Alstonfield, by licence at St Edwards in Leek on 5 March 1817. The witnesses were Jane Taylor and Francis Hilliard (likely to be a parish clerk). Is the Jane Taylor any relation to the Kezia Taylor who married William Marsh's grandson James Freakley in 1856?
An Hannah Taylor married Isaac Bagshaw on 27 October 1776 at Alstonfield. Are these Jane Bagshaws parents and is Jane Taylor her cousin/aunt?

An advertisement in the Staffordshire Advertiser of 19 march 1831 announces the sale of the property of the later Mr William Marsh to take place at Burn Fields near Norton-in-the-Moors on Tuesday 22nd March 1831 at 11am. The notice does not mention the real estate, only his effects, implements and stock.
