Possible birth/christenings: A Thomas Purslow, pewterer of Frankwell was a burgess who tendered himslef to vote in the Shrewsbury borough election on 30 May 1796. Could this be the same Thomas? Would he be too young? What was the voting age - if no him could it be a relative, for example his father? If ages were rounded down to nearest 5, then in 1841 Thomas was between 60 and 64 which rules out the birth in 1784 as he would have been only 57 and recorded as 55, therefore more likely to be the Thomas born in Pontesbury or Worthen in 1779 - he would have been about 62 in 1841. Thomas would have been about 37 by the time the first child found from his marriage to Mary was born, and she would have been around 30. It is possible that both were previously married and widowed. If Thomas was previously married possible marriages are: Tentative, but the only marriage record I've found fo a Thomas Purslow and a Mary in the relevant time frame is from Kidderminster, Worcestershire on 8 April 1810 and the bride was a Mary Rice or Price. Transcription only, no actual parish record copy seen. Occupation on daughter's marriage certificate in 1858 is pewterer. 1841 Thomas rounded age given as 60 living at The Mount, Frankwell in the St.Chads district of Shrewsbury, occupation Pewterer (born Shropshire) with Mary, rounded age given as 50 and birth place Ireland and Thomas (20) a cutler, Mary (20) and Caroline 14. Hannah was not there, but these names match with christening records from St Chads.. (HO107/926/8 p7) Thomas Purslow, a pewterer of Frankwell is listed as a freeman (no 482) in the Poll book of 1843, parish or rectory Meole Brace. Death entry for Thomas Purslow Q3 1849, Shrewsbury (1837-71) v18 p141 - aged 75 - but this is before the marriage of Hannah and he is not recorded as deceased on the marriage certificate (although not always) and it would place his birth about 1774 and he would have been about 67 at the time of the 1841 census. It is possible his age was recorded incorrectly either in the census or on the death certificate. He would have been 53 when Caroline was born. A corresponding parish record for Thomas Purslow, burried in parish of St Chad’s Shrewsbury on 24th August 1849, identifies him as aged 75 of Frankwell, “Late a Pewterer”. This gives very strong connection to this Thomas and suggests that the ages in the various records (possibly including this one) may have been inaccurate. |
