1815 Marriage in Ashbourne. Witnesses were William Allen and Ann? Allen. 1828 Pigot's directory of Staffordshire. William Bradbury is listed as a butcher trading at Chapel Passage, Hanley. 1841 A William Bradbury, 51 year old butcher is living with 15 year old Samuel Bradbury and 77 year old pensioner John Atkins at Farr Green Upper, Hanley. Hannah's father was a butcher named William, and this one would be about the right age. William is described as born in the county (Staffordshire).(HO107/990/7). It is likely that Samuel is William's son. There is a parish record for christening of Samuel Bradbury, parents William and Elizabeth on 23rd April 1826 at Hanley, Stoke on Trent. These could be the same parents as for Hannah, possbily born in Ashbourne in 1816. (See Hannah's notes) 1851 A William Bradbury is living at Farr Green, Hanley. A widower aged 63 and a butcher, he is the lodger of Ann Mellor, 64, a bread baker, unmarried from Chesterton. This William gives his place of birth as Ashbourne, Derbyshire and it indicates that he is either blind, deaf or dumb. (HO107/2004/260). In 1841 he was living in the next household to Ann Mellor, then a publican. William and Elizabeth, the parents of Samuel and probably Hannah are also the parents of Elizabeth born about 1824 in Hanley. Marriage of Elizabeth Bradbury to William Lawton and the presence of Jane Hill (daughter of Hannah Bradbury and Edwin Hill) with them in 1851 is very strong evidence that the William identified above is the correct person. A William Bradbury, aged 65 from Hope Street, was burried in the Parish of St John on 10th October 1852 (Stoke on Trent 1852 Q4 v6b page 92). Death certificate for William Bradbury of Hope Street, aged 65, gives his occupation as butcher and date of death as 6th October 1852 so making it a stronger match. The informant was William Colclough from High Street, Hanely. This William Bradbury died of Phthisis, the archaic name for tuberculosis, but in any event a progressive wasting disease. Not yet established any relationship between the Williams Bradbury and Colclough. A William Bradbury, parents John and Elizabeth Bradbury, was baptised in Doveridge, district of Derbyshire Dales, postal town Ashbourne, although closer to Uttoxeter, on 25th November 1786. This is a close fit but nothing certain. ALTERNATIVE Parish record from Stoke parish registers marriage of William Bradbury, bachelor and butcher from Wolstanton, to Ann Redfern, spinster 9 March1809, witness George Adams. This is also a possible set of parents for Hannah, although no record of her birth. William and Ann possibly lived in the Tunstall area, there are parish records of christenings of Elizabeth (b 8 Jan1810, chr 28 April 1811 Tunstall, bur 29 Jan 1812 Aged 2) Richard b 10 April 1811 and christened same day as Elizabeth, Mary Anne chr 11 Oct 1812, Tunstall. Other children with parents William and Ann Bradbury are: This William may have died on 16th April 1822 aged 33 (butcher of Tunstall in his 34th year). Death reported in Staffordshire Advertiser on 27th April 1822. This would give a date of birth about 1789. On 31st May 1823 the Staffordshire Advertiser reports the marriage of a Mr Hales, butcher of Tunstall to Mrs Bradbury, "of that place". This is likely the widow of William remarrying. |
