1841 Marriage: 23rd Dec 1845 John Bradbury and Elizabeth Tansley, both of full age from Hanley, married at St Peter’s church, Stoke. John was a collier and his father was William, a butcher. The bride’s father was John, a green grocer. Witnesses are Peter Carr and Sarah Tansley (presumably later to marry Isaac Harrison and then Samuel Bradbury). In 1851 there is a 16 year old Elizabeth (or at least Betsey) Bradbury, identified as servant, living with John Bradbury, a fishmonger, and his wife Betsey (in later census entries, Elizabeth) at Picadilly, Hanley. This could be a son of William Bradbury, butcher as the age and place of birth are correct (now confirmed by the marriage certificate). It is possible that Elizabeth (Betsey) is his niece. Is this the same John, has he changed his livelihood from collier to fishmonger? 1861 John 37 a fishmonger is living at 4 Market Lane, Longton with his wife Elizabeth 35 and sons John 7 and Alfred 3 1869 The Staffordshire Sentinel and Commecial and General Advertiser of 21st August 1869, page 6 column 2, reports that Samuel Taylor a fish seller charged with embezzeling 29 shillings form John Bradbury, a fish monger appeared before the magistrates. The defendant was committed for trial 1871 Cannot find any members of the family so they are either missed from the census or wrongly named. 1881 Betsey, 54 is widowed and living at 74 Paddock Street, Shelton, Hanley. She is described as house property owner. Her son John T, 27, single, an unemployed clerk is with her. There is a birth registration for John Tansley Bradbury in Stoke on Trent Q1 1854, 6b 174 so this strengthens the tie between the couple identified in the marriage certificate and this census entry. 1891 64 year old Bestey Bradbury is widowed, living on own means at 75 Paddock Street, Hanley. Her sons John T (single) 36 an agent and Alfred D 33 a fish salesman married to Mary A a saleswoman 33 form Hasslington, Cheshire. Both sons were born in Longton. Possible death registrations: John Bradbury married Elizabeth Tansley in Stoke on Trent: Q4 1845 17, 235 Another outside possiblity: A John Bradbury, with a father named William, married Sarah Vernon on 09 SEP 1839 at Burslem, St John. Could this be the brother of Elizabeth? He would have been only about 17 years old at the time of the wedding. However, If the 16 year old Betsey, living with John Bradbury, fishmonger, in 1851 is the Elizabeth we are looking for, then John’s wife was Betsey and not Sarah and the above family is still the most likely. |
