Possibly the daughter of Isaac Mountford and Mary, christened 2nd May 1762 in Endon, Leek. IGI C011542 Parish record from Endon adds no further information, neither does a similar entry in Leek. Parent's Thomas Mountford and Mary, chr 17 April 1764 Endon (IGI member's record) - The parish record for this baptism, indicating St Edward's Church, Leek, shows that Thomas and Mary lived at Crow Head. A similar record also appears for same child, parents and date at St Luke's Church Endon, but giving Endon as their place of residence. There are several other possibilities including Mary daughter of John and Sarah Mountford of Brown Edge, baptised St Edward's Leek, 29 September 1754 (also at St Luke's Endon) A Thomas Mountford, son of John, a taylor, and Sarah his wife was baptised at St Edward's Leek on 13 September 1735. A Thomas Mountford married Mary Sherratt at St Edward's Leek on 11 Feb 1755. The witnesses were Richard Wolfe and Joseph Myott (the latter maybe a parish clerk) Mountfort/Mountfords of Newgrange, Leekfrith The will of a Thomas Mountford/Mountfort, late of New Grange but latterly of Leek, was proved in 1800, Cheadle. Will of Thomas Mountford of New Grange, will made 4 November 1835, died 8 November 1835, probate granted to John and Ralph Mountford 28 April 1836. Eldest son Thomas, wife Ann, daughter Ann the wife of Joseph Billings, daughter Margaret the wife of Robert Pimlott, daughter Hannah the wife of James Wood, sons William, Ralph and Richard, daughter Sarah the wife of Enoch Hill, son Samuel Mountford. He leaves the New Grange estate to his son John There is a will of John Mountford/Mountfort of New Grange, Leekfrith, dated 1852 and who died on 10 September 1853 and proved 1853. He leaves his estate to his siblings: Ann the widow of Joseph Billings, Margaret the wife of Robert Pimlott, Hannah the widow of James Wood, William Mountford, Sarah the wife of Enoch Hill (all £170) and Samuel Mountford (£100 on the grounds he had already been given an advance of £70 during the testator's life time). He also leaves £170 to be divided between his sister in law Jane Mountford, wife of his brother Richard who had left for the United States of America) and her children William, Richard, John Margaret and Jane). He also mentions his father, Thomas Mountford will dated 6 November 1835 and brother Ralph (grocer and flax dresser) Mountford. A John Mountford of New Grange, Leekfrith, was buried on 13 Spetember 1853 at St Luke's Endon, age given as 71. Likely death registration |
