Paternal line information from various web-sites including Wikipeadia but beyond his father who was Thomas Thornes (m Mary Corbet, daughter of Roger Corbet) the details given are confusing as there are several references to his great grandfather being called Thomas.
This Roger Thornes was known as the wise Thorns of Shrewsbury. Served as bailiff six times between 1497 and 1531. He lived in Raven Street, opposite the opening into School Lane, and it was known as Thorn Place. (History of Shrewsbury).
He was also Alderman of Shrewsbury in 1509, Burgess in 1510, Coronor from 1514 to 1515 and Escheator from 1517-1518.
