At marriage in 1847 he was a gardener living at Cheetham Hill. His father Richard was a farmer.

1851 Living in Crumpsall, Cheetham, Lancashire - looks like Kirchen Bank? Peter, 36, born Cheshire, a labourer and Ann, 35 at home. Two children, Emma 2 and Eliza 3-6 months. Also a lodger, George Tawnden from Carmell, 48, some type of handiman.

According to family account in 1866 Peter and his family moved to Belmont in Alderley Edge. Anglicans at Nether Alderley.

1871 Living at Belmont, Bollin Fee, Wilmslow Cheshire aged 54 (?) , a gardener with wife Ann 54 and kids: Ann 17, John 13, a scholar, Mary 11 a scholar. Eliza is not present. Also living with them is 19 year old William Wilson, nephew a designer , silk, born Manchester. RG10/3680/12 p 17

1880 Morris and Co’s directory and Gazetteer of the Cheshire Towns with Wrexham list Peter Knowles of London Road as a miliner.

1881 Census, aged 67. Living at Street Lane, Chorley Alderly Edge. Occupation Gardener with wife Ann 65 and two daughters Eliza 30 and Annie 26, both single dressmakers. RG11/3499/107 p5. (Alderley Edge was created out of urban part of Chorley i n 1894)

Could it be that it was Peter’s daughters were running the miliners running the business while Peter continued as a grdener?

Family thought Peter or his son was perhaps Bell ringer.

1891 Living at London Road, Alderley Edge, Chorley. Aged 77, paralysed, living on own means, from Lymme, Cheshire. Living with him are wife Ann, 75 from Wrexham and two of their daughters, Eliza 40 and Annie 36, both dressmakers and drapers and ne ither married. Both born Cheetham Hill, Manchester. RG12/2819/81 p 29

1892 Peter Knowles of London Road Chorley, otherwise known as Alderley Edge is listed in Kelley’s directory as a draper.

Peter Knowles, died aged 81 6 days after a cerebral hemorrhage and from paralysis he had suffered for 8 years. Death recorded in Macclesfield, Cheshire 1895, Q4 v8a p135

He was burried at St John the Evangelist, Lindow on 17th December 1895, the entry gives his abode as Alderley Edge.
